There is something slightly magical about a garden room after dark. The structure sits quietly at the end of the lawn, glowing like a lantern, and the garden around it becomes a different place altogether. Get the lighting right and you will use the room far more often through autumn and winter. Get it wrong and you will either be sitting under a harsh white glare or fumbling about with a phone torch. The good news is that a welcoming scheme rarely costs much, and it is mostly about layering warm light rather than flooding the space.

Start with a plan: layers, not one big light

The most common mistake in a garden room is a single ceiling light on a single switch. It is flat, unflattering and impossible to soften. Think instead in layers, just as you would in a sitting room indoors.

• Ambient light — a gentle wash that lets you move about safely.
• Task light — bright, focused light where you read, work or cook.
• Accent light — small pools of warmth that pick out a plant, a beam or a picture.
• Transition light — the path and step lighting that carries you between house and cabin.

Each layer should be on its own switch or dimmer. That single decision gives you a room that can shift from bright workspace in the afternoon to soft retreat by nine o'clock.

Warm wall lights do the heavy lifting

For a garden room, wall lights are the workhorse. They take up no floor space, they throw light exactly where you need it, and they can be positioned to wash the walls rather than the middle of the room. Look for fittings in the 2200K to 2700K range — that is the warm, amber end of the scale, closer to candlelight than to office lighting.

Mount them roughly 1.7 to 1.8 metres from the floor, or about eye level when seated, so the bulb itself is never in your line of sight. A pair flanking a set of doors, or one on each side wall, creates a lovely symmetrical glow. If the room has exposed timber or a pale plaster finish, an up-and-down wall light will graze the surface beautifully and make the space feel taller.

Choose dimmable fittings if you can. Being able to drop the wall lights to twenty per cent is what turns a practical room into somewhere you actually want to sit with a glass of wine.

Floor lamps and table lamps for soft pools of light

Plug-in lamps are the secret weapon in a garden room, because they give you warm, low-level light without touching the fixed wiring. A floor lamp tucked into the corner behind a chair, with a fabric shade, throws a cosy pool of light that instantly makes the room feel inhabited.

• Use warm LED bulbs of 5 to 8 watts — any more and you lose the intimacy.
• Position lamps so the shade is below eye level when you are seated.
• Add a small table lamp on a desk or side table for a second, closer pool of light.
• Run them from a switched outdoor socket, or use smart plugs so you can turn everything off from the house.

If you have the option, ask your electrician to fit a couple of switched floor sockets in the corners when the room is being wired. It is a small cost at build stage and a real nuisance to retrofit later.

Lighting the path and the threshold

The walk to the cabin matters as much as the room itself, especially in winter when the ground is wet and the nights draw in early. A dark dash across the lawn with a torch undoes all the atmosphere you have created inside.

Keep it subtle. Nobody wants a runway.

• Bollard lights along one side of a path, spaced two to three metres apart, give a gentle guide without glare.
• Step lights recessed into a deck edge or stair riser are worth their weight in gold on frosty mornings.
• Festoon lights strung along a fence or between two posts add a relaxed, celebratory feel for summer evenings.
• A single uplighter at the base of a favourite tree or shrub casts dramatic shadows across the garden.

Aim for warm white throughout — mixing cool white path lights with warm interior lights is the quickest way to make a scheme look muddled.

The practical bits worth getting right

Outdoor electrics in the UK need care, and this is one area where a qualified electrician earns their fee. Any fitting exposed to the weather should be rated IP44 as a minimum, and IP65 or better where it may be directly hosed or splashed. Cables buried underground should be armoured, and the whole circuit should sit on an RCD for safety.

If you are lighting a structure that is not permanently wired, solar bollards and rechargeable table lamps have improved enormously in recent years and are perfectly respectable for path and accent lighting. They will not run all evening in December, but for summer they are a joy.

Finally, add a timer or smart switch. Having the path lights come on at dusk and switch off at midnight means you never arrive back to a dark garden, and you are not paying to light the lawn until dawn.

Making it work through the year

A garden room with good lighting is a year-round room. In summer the lamps stay off and the doors stay open. In November, you shut the door, drop the wall lights to a warm glow, switch on the floor lamp and suddenly a small building at the end of the garden becomes the best seat in the house.

Do not aim for brightness. Aim for warmth, layers and a clear path home. Get those three things right and you will find yourself out there far more often than you expected.
